There's a book called "The Seven Daughters of Eve" that explains some of the mitochondrial DNA research that Earl talked about in "layman's terms". The last 1/3 of the book is speculation...but the first 2/3 is science based regarding the genetic sequencing that was performed to trace our ancestry using mtDNA. It's very easy to understand and pretty interesting. :-)
